Donald Trump has issued a warning that a “100% TARIFF” could be imposed on all imports from countries that levy a digital services tax on US companies. The US President expressed his concerns in a recent post on Truth Social, highlighting discussions in several European nations about implementing such taxes.
In his statement, Trump made it clear that any country enforcing a digital services tax would face immediate consequences in the form of a 100% tariff on goods imported into the United States. He emphasized that this tariff would override any existing or pending trade agreements with the US.
This announcement follows remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron, who affirmed that France would not yield to pressure from Trump to repeal its digital tax on American tech firms. In response, Trump previously threatened to impose 100% tariffs on French wine unless the digital tax was revoked.
France has been applying a 3% tax on revenue from digital services generated by companies with significant earnings both domestically and globally since 2019. Trump has consistently opposed foreign attempts to tax or regulate American tech giants, warning of retaliatory measures against countries that pursue such policies.
The timing of Trump’s warning coincides with the upcoming July 4 deadline for the European Union and the US to ratify a tariff agreement limiting tariffs on most EU exports to 15%. While a trade deal between the EU and the US was finalized in May, digital taxes have remained a contentious issue, complicating relations between the two trading partners.
