US President Donald Trump criticized individuals he accused of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC, referring to them as “vandals.” Trump made these claims on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that federal officers had made several arrests in connection to the vandalism at the historic site.
According to Trump, the vandals not only caused damage to the Reflecting Pool but also poured corrosive chemicals into it. He mentioned that repairs to the pool are necessary, leading to its draining for restoration work.
In a separate incident, former Olympian David Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist, found himself detained by Park Police after allegedly touching a loose section of the pool’s liner. Hearn denied vandalizing or causing any damage to the pool.
Trump expressed frustration over the vandalism and the state of the Reflecting Pool, blaming what he referred to as the “Radical Left Lunatics” for the issues. He also criticized a journalist for allegedly scraping the pool’s surface in a separate incident.
Despite previous claims of completing the Reflecting Pool restoration, issues like algae accumulation have persisted. Measures, including the use of “nanobubbler technology,” have been implemented to address the recurring algae problem. Trump asserted that progress has been made in reducing algae levels by 75 percent.
The Reflecting Pool has been a longstanding concern for US administrations due to challenges such as algae growth affecting its intended reflection of the memorial.
