“Tragic Family Story: Son Takes Mother’s Life After Father’s Death”

A man tragically took the life of his mother following the news of his father’s passing. Simon Carter, who had been disconnected from his mother, Gwyneth Carter, for nearly two decades, made an unannounced visit to her residence in Macclesfield on July 12, 2025, seeking information about his father’s whereabouts.

Upon learning from Gwyneth that his father had passed away two years prior, the 50-year-old departed after a brief 10-15 minute interaction. Concerned about Simon’s behavior during the visit, Gwyneth confided in her sister, Janis, expressing uncertainty about Simon’s possible substance use and altered demeanor.

When attempts to reach Gwyneth went unanswered for several days, Janis visited her home on July 18 and sought assistance from a neighbor. Tragically, Gwyneth was discovered lifeless at the scene, having sustained severe head and neck injuries.

Simon faced sentencing at Chester Crown Court and received an indeterminate section 37 hospital order with a section 41 restriction under the Mental Health Act 1983. Since his arrest on July 20, 2025, in Torquay, Simon has been detained under the Mental Health Act. Strong forensic evidence implicating him through DNA and footwear links placed him at the crime scene, leading to his arrest.

A plea of manslaughter by diminished responsibility was accepted due to compelling medical evidence indicating Simon’s undisclosed mental health issues. Gwyneth’s family paid tribute to her, describing her as a resilient individual with a memorable laughter and a fierce personality. They highlighted her dedication to her loved ones, her competitive spirit in playing darts, and her fondness for her loyal dog, Oscar.

DI Simon Mills emphasized the extensive investigation involving over 4,000 hours of CCTV footage and strong forensic evidence linking Simon to the crime scene. The investigation revealed Simon’s erratic behavior and probable undiagnosed mental health concerns, leading to the acceptance of a plea based on diminished responsibility. The authorities expressed condolences to Gwyneth’s family and appreciation for public cooperation in the investigation, citing overwhelming evidence gathered.
