After a prolonged period of intense heat and dry conditions, the Met Office predicts that some much-needed rain will arrive this week. Recent data from the national weather agency revealed that the UK experienced temperatures exceeding 30C for 13 consecutive days, with central and south-east England enduring a record-breaking spell of no rainfall from July 2 to July 15.
The prolonged dry weather has posed significant challenges for farmers and led to wildfires in various parts of the UK. However, relief is in sight as showers are expected in some regions later this week.
According to the latest forecast from the Met Office, meteorologist Clare Nasir anticipates “patchy rain” in the far north and north-west of Scotland today, with intermittent showers also likely in Northern Ireland. Temperatures in the central belt of Scotland, South Wales, central England, and the south-east are forecasted to reach 25C to 26C, a noticeable drop from the previous week’s extreme heat.
Tomorrow, a weather front is expected to bring more showery rain, especially in the far north of Scotland, with up to 10 or 15mm possible in certain areas. Eastern parts of Wales, central and southern England will experience the warmest temperatures, potentially reaching 25-27C, while central Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to see slightly lower temperatures.
Thursday will see increasing humidity and more rain showers, particularly along the east coast. Although rain is forecasted for central England, Ms. Nasir mentioned that the showers will be scattered and light. The day is expected to be bright and sunny for most regions, with Wales, central England, and southern England being the warmest areas.
Looking ahead to Friday, showery bursts of rain are predicted to affect central and northern Scotland, while the rest of the UK will experience a fine day with sunny spells. Temperatures may reach 28C in London, with other regions like South Wales, the Midlands, and Yorkshire expecting highs of 24-25C.
As the weekend approaches, there is a possibility of more rain as high pressure weakens, allowing weather fronts to become more active and move southwards. This shift is likely to bring much-needed rainfall to central and northern parts of the UK that have been exceptionally dry in recent weeks.
