A UK resident who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak originated, is currently in isolation at the hospital. Although the patient has not been diagnosed with Ebola yet, medical professionals are taking necessary precautions.
Ebola is a rare but severe infection primarily seen in Africa, with minimal cases outside the continent, including no confirmed cases in the UK. The virus is transmitted from wild animals to humans and then through contact with infected bodily fluids, with no documented cases of person-to-person transmission in the UK.
Typical symptoms of Ebola can manifest within two to 21 days after exposure and may resemble flu-like symptoms such as high fever, extreme fatigue, and headaches. The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen over 2,000 cases in one province alone, with suspected cases emerging in other areas, raising concerns about the virus’s spread.
Health officials are facing challenges in containing the outbreak as 80% of new cases have unknown transmission sources, making it difficult to track and control the spread of the virus. The current outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments, posing a significant challenge for health authorities.
The UK resident under isolation in London had been involved in supporting the Ebola response efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and was brought back to the UK on a dedicated flight for monitoring and assessment. Despite the precautionary measures, the risk to the public remains low, as confirmed by the UK Health Security Agency.
The last reported Ebola case in the UK was in 2015, linked to the 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa. Apart from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda has reported 20 cases, and one case was identified in France, resulting in two deaths in Uganda, according to the World Health Organization.
