A tragic incident unfolded as a five-year-old boy, João Gabriel Ferreira dos Santos, who had autism, was discovered deceased in a sewage tank in Brazil. The boy went missing after informing his mother that he was heading to the outdoor toilet. Despite intense search efforts involving hundreds of individuals using various resources like dogs, drones, and a helicopter, it took three days to locate João’s body. The non-verbal child required substantial support for his autism and lived with his parents on a rural property where they worked as caretakers.
The search parties meticulously combed through three square kilometers of dense woodland, ponds, and farmland before the boy was found submerged in a two-meter-deep pool of water formed on the damaged cover of a bio-digestor near the family’s residence. Firefighters eventually located João after draining the water from the structure, which was used for organic waste processing on a farm in Araucária, Paraná.
The fatal accident occurred due to a tear in the cover of the bio-digestor, which led to the water accumulation. Despite being fenced, a gap in the area’s enclosure allowed João access to the hazardous location. Governor Ratinho Junior expressed condolences to the family, and authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident. While there are currently no indications of foul play, law enforcement officials are treating the boy’s death as a likely accident.
