Two British individuals tragically lost their lives when the railing on their hotel balcony collapsed in Lanzarote, according to an inquest. Darren Silcox, aged 56, and Nicholas Thomas, aged 54, both hailing from Cwmbran, Wales, fell from a balcony at a flat in the Canary Islands. The incident occurred in October 2025 at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise, where the pair fell into the atrium stairwell at approximately 1.30 am after a night out.
Darren passed away within two hours of the fall, while Nicholas was airlifted back to the UK for medical treatment. Unfortunately, Nicholas succumbed to his injuries nearly 10 months later on July 10 at University Hospital in Llandough. An investigation by Spain’s Civil Guard is underway to determine if inadequate maintenance or safety measures played a part in the fatal accident.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after the incident, confirming Darren’s death upon arrival. Gwent coroner Rose Farmer disclosed that Nicholas fell between 15 to 22 feet due to a collapsed wooden bannister. He received initial treatment at Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital before being transferred back to the UK in late November. The previous inquest into Darren’s death revealed that his cause of death was a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and skull lacerations.
The proceedings have been postponed until April 14 next year, with expectations for a joint inquest to occur.
