A young man broke down in tears during his court sentencing for sexually assaulting a girl he had met while socializing in a park in South Shields. Owen Wilson, now 18, visibly emotional, received a two-year suspended prison term from Judge Penny Moreland at Newcastle Crown Court.
Wilson, residing in Grace Court, South Shields, was also ordered to perform 250 hours of community service and engage in 40 days of rehabilitation activities. Additionally, he was issued a 10-year restraining order and mandated to register as a sex offender for a decade.
The court was informed that Wilson, aged 15 at the time of the incident, had been with friends at a South Shields park on August 19, 2023. Reports from Chronicle Live indicate that the group had interacted with younger girls at the park throughout the day.
Subsequently, the victim was left alone with Wilson, leading to the assault. The following day, the victim confided in a friend about the rape, who then alerted a family member that contacted the authorities. During police questioning, Wilson remained silent but later admitted to the assault during a plea hearing.
Judge Penny Moreland justified the sentence by stating it was in line with what would have been given when the offense occurred, emphasizing Wilson’s age at the time.
