“NHS Dental Crisis: Millions Suffer Amid Appointment Struggles”

The current dental crisis within the NHS continues to affect approximately one in four adults, leading to a situation described as “obscene” by dental professionals. Recent analysis of the GP Survey conducted by Ipsos reveals a growing trend of individuals giving up on seeking dental appointments due to perceived difficulties in securing one.

In a distressing case, a patient waited eight years for treatment for severe dental issues, impacting her ability to eat and causing immense suffering. The latest survey for England shows that 6.2 million people refrained from seeking dental treatment in the past two years due to concerns about appointment availability, representing an increase of 300,000 individuals compared to the previous year.

While there has been a slight decrease in overall unmet dental needs from 2025 to 2026, with 13.3 million people still lacking necessary care, dentists argue that progress is insufficient. The British Dental Association’s analysis indicates that 4.9 million adult patients struggled to access NHS care in the last two years, underscoring the persistent challenges faced in the dental sector.

Eddie Crouch, Chair of the BDA, expressed deep concern over the plight of millions of individuals waiting for essential dental care, emphasizing the urgency for significant reforms. The issue of unmet dental needs is further compounded by financial barriers, with 1.3 million individuals citing the high cost of dental charges as a reason for not seeking NHS care.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Mirror has launched the Dentists for All campaign, aiming to address the widespread oral health challenges affecting many individuals who resort to extreme measures like extracting their own teeth due to limited access to professional care. The dire situation underscores the pressing need for substantial changes in the NHS dental system to ensure comprehensive and accessible services for all in need.
