A young girl has been honored for her bravery after risking her life to rescue a boy from drowning. Shelby Quigley, aged 14, took swift action when she saw 15-year-old Lotus Bowker struggling in the River Wyre. Despite the strong currents, Shelby courageously jumped into the river, shed her heavy clothes and boots, and managed to bring the boy to the surface.
She bravely held onto him while battling the water’s force, until a man joined in to assist in getting the boy to safety. Although the boy sadly passed away in the hospital the next day, Shelby’s heroic efforts did not go unnoticed. She was awarded the prestigious Royal Humane Society Silver Medal for her exceptional courage in the face of danger.
Andrew Chapman, the Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, commended Shelby’s actions, stating that she provided the boy with the best possible chance of survival. The coroner’s report revealed that Lotus, who had a Developmental Learning Disorder, had entered the river against warnings and lacked proper swimming skills. Shelby’s quick thinking and bravery in the critical moment were praised by witnesses and officials alike.
The tragic incident, which occurred during a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition, highlighted Shelby’s remarkable courage and selflessness. Despite the heartbreaking outcome, Shelby’s valor and determination in the face of danger have rightfully earned her the title of a true heroine.
