A woman has shared her distress upon discovering her elderly mother covered in bruises at the care home where she resided. Mechelle McBride’s mother, Elizabeth, lived at Greyfriars Care Home in Mount Vernon, Scotland. Mechelle observed her mother’s health declining and noticed unexplained bruises and injuries during her stay there.
Elizabeth, who suffered from vascular dementia, passed away in December 2022 at the age of 81. Mechelle took legal action against the care home, resulting in a substantial compensation for Elizabeth’s estate. Mechelle expressed her anguish at witnessing her mother’s inadequate care at the nursing home, describing it as a dreadful experience.
She emphasized the importance of sharing her story to prevent other families from facing similar challenges. Mechelle reached out to the Care Inspectorate after her concerns were disregarded, and all her complaints were validated by the regulatory body.
Despite expecting one-on-one care for her mother, Mechelle noted that Elizabeth experienced numerous falls, substantial weight loss, and unexplained injuries at Greyfriars. She highlighted the discrepancy between the care paid for and the care received, stressing that her mother deserved better treatment.
Mechelle documented her mother’s deteriorating condition through photos showing increasing bruises and injuries during her visits. She recounted instances where Elizabeth ended up in the hospital weighing less than five stone, expressing frustration at the lack of attention to her mother’s needs.
After unsuccessful attempts to address issues with the care home, Mechelle sought intervention from the Care Inspectorate, leading to the validation of her complaints. The inspection report raised concerns about inadequate communication, failure to address health issues promptly, and substandard nutritional care for Elizabeth.
Seeking accountability, Mechelle enlisted the services of Thompsons Solicitors Scotland, resulting in a financial settlement from the care home. She hopes that by speaking out, she can prevent other families from enduring similar hardships.
