The monarchs, King and Queen, have announced their attendance at a major sporting event on the same day as the wedding of King Charles’ nephew. Peter Phillips is set to marry Harriet Sperling in Kemble, Gloucestershire, with various royal family members, including Princess Anne and Prince William, expected to be present. Meanwhile, the Jockey Club has confirmed that Charles and Camilla will be present at Epsom Downs Racecourse for Betfred Derby Day to witness the 247th running of the esteemed Derby.
As joint patrons of the Jockey Club, the King and Queen’s participation on the upcoming Saturday continues the royal tradition of attending this prestigious race. In her 70-year reign, the late Queen only missed the Epsom Derby on a few occasions.
The horse racing event coincides with the King’s nephew’s wedding, which is happening nearly 100 miles away. However, it is anticipated that Charles and Camilla will make an appearance at the wedding before heading to Epsom in time for the main race.
Jim Allen, the General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, expressed delight at the royal couple’s attendance on Derby Day, emphasizing their keen interest and support for UK horse racing. He highlighted the significance of Derby Day as a beloved event that brings joy and entertainment to millions worldwide, noting the long-standing tradition of royal presence at the event.
Earlier in April, it was announced that Mr. Phillips, the eldest grandchild of the late Queen, would wed his fiancée, Harriet, on June 6 in a summer ceremony in the Cotswolds. The couple will exchange vows at All Saints Church in Kemble, Cirencester, with Mr. Phillips residing near the church on his mother’s Gatcombe Park estate in Minchinhampton.
Mr. Phillips, who split from his first wife in 2020, shares custody of their two children and is the brother of Zara Tindall. His engagement to Ms. Sperling, whom he began dating in 2024, was revealed last August. The couple had the honor of being guests of Charles and Camilla at Royal Ascot in June and participated in the traditional carriage procession with the royal family at the Berkshire racecourse.
