Ten climbers are currently missing following an avalanche that struck Pakistan’s Broad Peak, which ranks as the 12th highest mountain globally. The group, led by the renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, has been unresponsive for several hours since the avalanche occurred on Thursday afternoon, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
Among the missing individuals are five climbers from Nepal, under the leadership of Purja, and a Pakistani climber named Sohail Sakhi from Hunza, as confirmed by the club. Major General Irfan Arshad, President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, stated that they are closely coordinating with government authorities to aid in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
Arshad emphasized that the club is actively mobilizing helicopters and other available relief resources to reach the affected area promptly. The situation is continuously being monitored for any updates.
