A major renovation project at a bustling European airport will lead to its closure for nearly a week. Spain’s Almeria Airport is set to shut down for six days in February 2028 to enhance its runway, resulting in the cancellation of all flights during that period. This will be the first runway work in two decades at the airport, located just a short drive from the city center of Almeria in Spain’s Andalusia region, which serves around 800,000 passengers annually, with British travelers accounting for a significant portion.
The runway upgrade is part of a comprehensive 19-month initiative to modernize the entire airport infrastructure, with a total cost of €29 million (£24.8 million). Construction activities will primarily take place at night between 10:45 pm and 7:10 am the following day, impacting flights scheduled during these hours. Aena, the operator of Spain’s airports, has informed airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, and Iberia, which operate at Almeria Airport, about the upcoming changes, prompting them to rearrange flight schedules or redirect routes to alternative airports.
Popular flight routes from Almeria Airport to the UK include destinations such as Birmingham, London Southend, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, and Leeds Bradford. Apart from the runway improvements, the project encompasses enhancements to taxiways, replacement of 34 directional signs, and upgrading over 600 lights.
