FIFA’s attempt to enlist external investors in a portion of its holdings has collapsed following resistance from global officials and internal discord among the football governing body’s executives.
The plan involved FIFA seeking to generate approximately $4.2 billion (£3.1 billion) by divesting around 20% of its ownership, valuing the new segment at $20 billion (£14.8 billion).
The FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative faced significant opposition, even within the top leadership, leading to its abandonment as confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and sources familiar with the situation.
Infantino expressed that the project had caused divisive rifts contrary to FIFA’s core aim of unity and advancement, leading to the decision to discontinue the proposal.
The deal, which included involvement from Thrive Capital led by Joshua Kushner, encountered setbacks prompting stakeholders to withdraw, citing concerns over the venture’s direction.
The failed scheme entailed transferring FIFA’s revenue-generating assets into a fresh entity named FIFA Forward Enterprise, encompassing assets like TV rights, sponsorships, licensing, and ticket sales.
Infantino set a deadline of September 19 for FIFA’s 211 member nations to endorse the proposal, offering potential payouts of up to $40 million per nation, a move criticized as a timed inducement, thereby raising doubts on Infantino’s leadership.
European football authorities threatened boycotts, while FIFA’s North American division and the Asian Football Confederation rejected the arrangement, underscoring the widespread disapproval.
The fallout extended to Infantino’s close associates, with FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer expressing concerns of a lack of transparency and governance within the organization.
Additionally, Infantino’s senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned in protest against the initiative to sell a stake in the World Cup, highlighting the internal discord within FIFA.
The controversy surrounding the proposal is viewed by many member nations as a pivotal test of confidence ahead of the upcoming presidential election in March.
