RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme has stated that details regarding the firearms involved in the tragic mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., will not be disclosed at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. This decision aligns with a previous statement made by an RCMP spokesperson earlier this month regarding the incident that resulted in multiple fatalities in February at a residence and school in the small British Columbia town.
In response to a letter from gun control advocacy groups, including PolySeSouvient, Duheme emphasized the necessity of withholding such information to maintain the integrity of the active investigation. The groups had urged for transparency, citing the importance of accurate data to address potential shortcomings in gun control laws and enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
The shooting, carried out by 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals before the shooter took her own life. The lack of clarity regarding the firearms used and those seized from Van Rootselaar’s residence has prompted a consortium of media organizations to pursue legal action to obtain this information.
Duheme explained in his letter that the disclosure of details related to the firearms is contingent on the progress of the investigation, which involves the meticulous examination of both digital and physical evidence. He also mentioned the B.C. Coroners Service’s plan to conduct an inquest into the mass shooting, asserting the RCMP’s commitment to participating fully in the process and implementing any recommendations that may arise.
Despite these assurances, PolySeSouvient expressed frustration over the ongoing secrecy surrounding the case, emphasizing the need for timely and transparent disclosure of pertinent facts. The group emphasized that while they acknowledge the need to protect the investigation, essential details about the firearms should not be unduly withheld, particularly as the community seeks closure and understanding.
