The Mayor of Guelph, Cam Guthrie, expressed concerns over the recent homecoming parties in Guelph, Ont., stating that they were particularly troublesome. Social media videos captured thousands of young individuals donning red, yellow, white, and black attire, reveling in festivities at off-campus locations near Stone Road Mall. The crowd size swelled throughout the afternoon, with footage depicting objects being thrown among the crowd and individuals scaling building walls, leading to some falling into bushes.
Authorities took action by closing off Chancellors Way between South Ring Road West and Stone Road West around 5 p.m. on Saturday to ensure public safety. Mayor Guthrie acknowledged the local residents’ frustrations with the unruly party, emphasizing the significant strain on resources, including waste management, transit, bylaw enforcement, and emergency services such as police, fire, and paramedics.
The Guelph Police Service reported a notable increase in the attendance at the homecoming gathering compared to previous years, resulting in various safety issues. Incidents ranged from thrown objects, building climbing, shoplifting, vandalism affecting nearby businesses, to multiple injuries requiring medical attention, including cuts, lacerations, and intoxication-related cases.
Additional police units, including the tactics and rescue team, were deployed to restore order, prevent further harm, and facilitate emergency response efforts. While some individuals faced criminal charges, the authorities continue to investigate reported incidents, videos, and evidence, with the possibility of more charges being filed.
Mayor Guthrie highlighted the strain on Guelph General Hospital’s emergency department due to the influx of patients from the homecoming events, including individuals treated for head injuries from thrown bottles, lacerations, and intoxication issues. Dr. Alex Folkl, the hospital’s chief of emergency medicine, emphasized the critical strain on hospital resources and urged students to make responsible choices regarding alcohol and substance use.
Despite the recurring challenges posed by large unsanctioned student gatherings, Mayor Guthrie acknowledged the difficulty in preventing such events, especially on private properties. He commended the students who assisted in cleaning up after the festivities but reiterated the importance of maintaining control and respect to prevent future incidents. Discussions between city officials, the university, and emergency services are planned to address the situation promptly.
The University of Guelph issued a pre-homecoming statement urging students to uphold community values and be mindful of their actions. While efforts are being made to address the aftermath of the events, ongoing communication and collaboration are essential to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
