“Rare World Cup Jersey Linked to Roy Keane Up for £20K Auction”

A rare World Cup football jersey, previously unknown to many, is set to be auctioned for an estimated £20,000. Roy Keane, the ITV pundit, famously left the Ireland squad before the Japan 2002 World Cup, causing a stir in the football world. Despite his departure, a custom-printed Manchester United star’s tournament jersey had already been produced.

The jersey was safeguarded by the team’s kitman during the Japan trip and eventually made its way back to Dublin. Jonathan Courtenay, who acquired the shirt, is now offering it up for sale after holding onto it for 24 years. Reflecting on the decision, he mentioned that while the item no longer excites him, he recognizes its value and is ready to part with it.

The auction, hosted by Budds auctioneers in Wellingborough, Northants, will coincide with the start of the World Cup. Jonathan, residing in Dublin with his family, recalls the infamous clash between Keane and manager Mick McCarthy during the buildup to the 2002 tournament.

David Convery from Budds auctioneers described the jersey as a significant piece of Irish football history, symbolizing the high-profile dispute between Keane and the team management. The upcoming auction will feature a range of iconic football memorabilia, including items linked to legendary moments such as Gordon Banks’ ‘Save of the Century’ shirt and Peter Shilton’s ‘Hand of God’ match goalkeeper jersey.

The auction also boasts rare collectibles from England’s 1966 World Cup triumph, adding to the allure of the event for football enthusiasts worldwide.
