Police in Scotland are currently investigating videos that allegedly show individuals from the general public being filmed without their knowledge using Meta smart glasses. The investigation involves Scott Margerison, who is under scrutiny for footage that surfaced online, indicating that people, including shop employees and ferry staff, were recorded unknowingly during a journey across Scotland. Complaints have been received by Police Scotland, prompting an evaluation of the videos shared by the 42-year-old individual from Rochdale to determine if any criminal activities took place.
According to a spokesperson from Police Scotland, the content of the online videos is being reviewed. Scott, who goes by the alias E Dobbin on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, uploaded a series of clips filmed while traveling through Scotland in late June and early July. The videos depict him approaching members of the public while wearing Meta’s smart glasses, engaging with a Sikh shopkeeper, making inappropriate remarks about young women, and recording scenes aboard a CalMac ferry.
In one particular video, Scott is seen conversing with a UK-born Sikh shopkeeper of Indian descent on Skye, discussing topics like “forced” diversity and referencing the Kalergi Plan, a far-right conspiracy theory. The shopkeeper, who runs the shop with her teenage daughter, expressed that his comments were somewhat derogatory. She later revealed feeling intimidated by Scott, who she described as physically imposing, and was distressed upon learning that a secretly recorded video of their interaction was shared online.
Another video captured Scott making lewd comments about teenagers on a CalMac ferry and engaging with them and their parents without their awareness of being filmed. The legality of recording individuals using AI smart glasses depends on the circumstances, with considerations such as privacy expectations in public spaces, potential harassment, stalking implications, and individuals’ rights to privacy in certain settings.
Concerns have been raised regarding the use of AI smart glasses, which can record videos discreetly without individuals’ knowledge.
