Parliament’s ethics overseer initiated a fresh probe into Reform, but Nigel Farage swiftly shifted the focus with a new initiative. Following deputy leader Richard Tice facing scrutiny for undisclosed interests, Farage introduced Operation Fortress. This plan proposes deploying the Royal Navy to forcibly return small boat migrants to France, diverting attention from Reform’s uncomfortable inquiries.
The proposed naval display serves as a mere distraction, lacking substantive details or feasibility. Former Royal Navy commander Tom Sharpe criticized the plan, highlighting the Navy’s inadequate resources and the inappropriate use of costly warships for Channel operations.
Farage’s attempt to position himself as a savior from a crisis he contributed to is disingenuous. Despite his promises during the Brexit campaign for border control, the dismantling of the Dublin Convention led to a surge in small boat crossings, from 299 in 2018 to over 45,000 in 2022. Blaming others for the consequences of his actions, Farage now seeks taxpayer funding for a theatrical solution to mask his failings.
Reform’s blue-collar supporters deserve better treatment, rather than being manipulated or underestimated as electoral pawns. The party’s leadership is under scrutiny for financial improprieties, questionable standards, and dubious funding sources. Voters deserve transparency about Farage’s role in exacerbating chaos and Reform’s attempts to gain their trust and support at their expense.
