Norway Considers Smart Glasses Ban in Public Areas

Norway’s government is considering a temporary ban on smart glasses in certain public spaces to address the potential risks posed by these devices. The proposed ban would cover areas where privacy is paramount, such as healthcare facilities, fitness centers with changing rooms, and places frequented by children like schools and playgrounds. The government aims to regulate the use of smart glasses in locations such as parks, beaches, museums, and shopping centers as well.

The authorities plan to use the temporary ban as a means to evaluate the impact of smart glasses and determine the need for permanent regulations. They emphasize that the goal is not a complete prohibition but rather a targeted restriction to safeguard privacy and prevent unauthorized surveillance. Exceptions may be made for vulnerable groups to allow for socially beneficial uses of smart glasses in specific circumstances.

Privacy advocates have commended Norway’s proactive stance on smart glasses, highlighting the importance of protecting individuals’ rights and privacy in the face of advancing technology. Meanwhile, Meta, the company behind popular social media platforms, has introduced AI glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban, promoting responsible usage and respecting people’s preferences when it comes to recording activities.

Despite Meta’s efforts to ensure user privacy, some businesses have taken steps to restrict the sale of AI glasses due to growing concerns about privacy violations. Notably, a Dutch eyewear retailer has halted the distribution of Ray-Ban Meta glasses in response to public and political debates surrounding the ethical use of smart glasses.

In a similar vein, organizations like the UK Cinema Association have implemented policies to limit the use of camera-enabled smart glasses, citing worries over privacy infringements and potential piracy issues. These actions reflect a broader trend of heightened scrutiny and regulation of emerging technologies to safeguard individual privacy and security in public settings.
