Alex Ovechkin has informed his Washington Capitals teammates that he plans to retire after this season in the National Hockey League. In a video shared by the team on social media, Ovechkin emphasized the importance of informing his fellow players before anyone else.
During his address in the locker room, Ovechkin expressed mixed feelings, stating, “It’s sad, but it is what it is.” He encouraged his team to savor the moment and strive for greatness this year. Ovechkin, aged 41, recently surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record in April 2025 and has committed to playing one more year under a new contract.
Optimistic about the team’s potential, Ovechkin remarked, “We have an unbelievable team this year. Let’s secure a spot in the playoffs, have fun, and cherish every moment because time passes quickly.” With 929 career goals, Ovechkin embarked on his 22nd season in professional hockey.
