“Tragic Collision Kills Three in Foam Lake”

In Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, signs of grief are evident following the recent deaths of three local residents. Many homes in the town, situated approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Regina, are adorned with stuffed animals on their front steps as a tribute to two young girls who tragically lost their lives.

The girls, aged five and eight, along with a 40-year-old woman, were fatally injured in a collision involving their SUV and a truck attempting to overtake a semi-truck, as reported by the RCMP. A man accompanying them in the SUV sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to the hospital by STARS air ambulance.

Community members in Foam Lake shared with CBC that the individuals in the SUV constituted a family, although their identities have not been disclosed. The driver of the truck, identified as 40-year-old Kelly Knopf from Sumter, South Carolina, and a passenger were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while another passenger with severe injuries was airlifted by STARS, according to the RCMP.

Following an investigation, Kelly Knopf was apprehended and charged with three counts each of dangerous operation of a vehicle resulting in death and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm. He is scheduled to be transferred to the Regina correctional center on Monday.

Although Knopf was slated to appear in Yorkton provincial court on Monday, his hospitalization prevented his presence, with his lawyer, Brian Pfefferle, representing him via telephone. Pfefferle relayed a statement on behalf of Knopf asserting that there is no current evidence indicating alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed as factors in the collision.

Knopf, who had traveled from South Carolina to Saskatchewan for a hunting expedition, has a longstanding connection to the region and is appreciative of the support and empathy extended by the community amidst the aftermath of the tragic incident. Pfefferle mentioned that plans to address Knopf’s release are anticipated for Wednesday.
