The mother of Sally Anne Bowman expressed her shock and dismay over a former Metropolitan Police Detective Sergeant, Jason Grafham, who had stored and shared disturbing images of her murdered daughter. Grafham, aged 55, retired with his pension shortly before being found guilty of gross misconduct for distributing the images and making inappropriate sexual comments to female colleagues.
Linda Bowman, aged 64, disclosed to the Daily Mirror that Grafham possessed the photos of her daughter’s tragic state for two decades. She condemned his actions, stating that the exposure of such graphic images to fellow officers was reprehensible and unforgivable. She questioned why Grafham was allowed to retire while still under investigation, emphasizing her disappointment in the lack of legal action taken against him.
Sally Anne, who was only 18 years old, was brutally murdered and assaulted in Croydon, South London, on September 25, 2005. The perpetrator, Mark Dixie, now 55, was convicted of her murder in 2008 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 34 years.
Grafham, the exhibits officer involved in Sally Anne’s case, was found guilty of retaining and sharing the distressing images, as well as making inappropriate sexual remarks towards three female colleagues. Linda, in a statement to the tribunal, expressed the profound emotional distress caused by Grafham’s actions, emphasizing the traumatic impact on her family.
The tribunal revealed that Grafham’s misconduct exacerbated the suffering of Sally Anne’s family and served no legitimate policing purpose. His inappropriate behavior was underscored by the tribunal chairman, Paul Trevers, who criticized the lack of respect shown to the victim.
Det Chief Supt Angela Craggs issued a formal apology to Sally Anne’s family, denouncing Grafham’s actions as deplorable and disrespectful. Craggs emphasized that such behavior and language have no place within the police force.
The case involving Grafham follows previous incidents of police officers engaging in misconduct, highlighting the need for accountability and ethical conduct within law enforcement. Linda hopes that Grafham’s case will serve as a cautionary tale for other officers, reminding them of the privilege and responsibility that comes with being in law enforcement.
