Recent data highlights the areas in Britain with the highest rates of sexual crimes, revealing significant disparities across different regions. Shocking statistics indicate a surge in sexual assaults, with a total of 217,567 offenses reported in England and Wales between March 2025 and March 2026, representing a four percent increase compared to the previous year.
Reports from 2025 show that over 15 percent of individuals aged 16 and above, totaling almost 7.7 million, have experienced sexual assault, while close to four percent, approximately 1.9 million people, have been victims of rape or attempted rape. Government data reveals that there are currently 73,047 registered sex offenders under police supervision in the UK, marking an 85 percent increase over the past 15 years since the initial publication of police figures in 2010/11, which listed 36,921 registered sex offenders in England and Wales.
One particular region stands out for its high prevalence of sexual crimes, recording 5.0 offenses for every 1,000 residents. Cleveland Police, covering areas like Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, and Redcar & Cleveland within a 230-square-mile radius, reported the highest rate of sexual offenses, exceeding the national average of 3.5. They recorded 12,751 sexual offenses, marking a year-on-year increase of approximately 10 percent.
In a recent case in January, Paul Devaney, 42, received a life sentence at Teesside Crown Court after pleading guilty to rape, assault with intent to commit a sexual offense, false imprisonment, and controlling and coercive behavior.
Following Cleveland, West Yorkshire emerges as the second area with a high rate of sexual assaults, experiencing a four percent increase and recording 4.4 offenses per 1,000 people. Notable convictions include Jordan Reynolds, 30, who was sentenced to 17 years at Bradford Crown Court in March for multiple rape charges.
Other regions with relatively high rates of sexual offenses include Avon and Somerset with 4.3, Greater Manchester with 4.2, and South Yorkshire and the West Midlands both with 4.0 offenders per thousand residents. Conversely, Surrey Police reported the lowest number of sexual offenses at 2.3, while London falls below the national average with the Metropolitan Police confirming a rate of 3.1 offenses per 1,000 individuals.
A spokesperson from the Home Office emphasized the commitment to reducing violence against women and girls, acknowledging the challenges posed by the current statistics. The Crown Prosecution Service reported a significant increase in charging ‘rape-flagged suspects,’ with a rise in cases referred by police, charged by prosecutors, and successfully completed in the courts. Prosecutors achieved a record rate of charging almost four in five cases referred by police.
Siobhan Blake, the National CPS lead for Rape and Serious Sexual Offenses, expressed the importance of providing justice to victims of such crimes and encouraged survivors to come forward, assuring them of support and a commitment to seeking justice for the offenders.
