For centuries, the iconic No10 Downing Street has been synonymous with British Prime Ministers, serving as a powerful symbol of leadership. However, a new addition has emerged – a second black door located in a Manchester office block.
Andy Burnham is transforming Heron House, the regional headquarters of security agency GCHQ in the north-west, into a key hub for driving his agenda to tackle regional disparities in the UK. This strategic move underscores his commitment to addressing inequalities across the nation.
Access to the inner workings of Heron House has been limited due to its classified operations. Nevertheless, Mr. Burnham recently allowed cameras inside, granting a glimpse of the office space that will serve as the operational center for governing the country, at least one day per week.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a replica No10 door, leading to glass-fronted office rooms adorned with the iconic Manchester worker bee image, a symbol dear to Mr. Burnham, who bears it as a tattoo on his arm.
The office is adorned with portraits by artist Stanley Chow, featuring notable Mancunians such as Marcus Rashford, Alan Turing, Emmeline Pankhurst, and Lemn Sissay, reflecting the city’s rich history and achievements.
Having served as Mayor of Greater Manchester for nearly ten years, Mr. Burnham is familiar with the building. He described the experience of being in the space, with its patterned floor and expansive windows overlooking Albert Square, as a significant moment in his journey.
In contrast to the traditional opulence of 10 Downing Street, Heron House presents a modern and functional workspace. Occupants of the historic residence have long grumbled about the challenges posed by its layout, with teams separated across various sections, cramped offices, and underutilized state rooms.
Keir Starmer humorously recounted his surprise at discovering a room full of people behind what he thought was a simple cupboard door. Despite the presence of the well-known No10 cat Larry, reports of mice scurrying and maintenance issues like inconsistent air conditioning and lukewarm taps have surfaced.
An official from No10 remarked on the building’s outdated design, labeling it as unsuitable for a contemporary work environment.
