A mother, devastated by her daughter’s tragic death, reveals that her daughter, Carla, purchased 18 bottles of wine in the week leading up to her passing. She expressed concern that alcohol delivery services allowed Carla to feed her addiction discreetly, despite her declining health that restricted her ability to even visit local stores.
Carla, a mother herself, succumbed to cirrhosis at the age of 38, a condition resulting from prolonged liver damage. Her mother, Teri, aged 64, now advocates for stricter measures by supermarkets and delivery firms to prevent vulnerable individuals from excessively ordering alcohol online.
Reflecting on Carla’s struggle, Teri recollected a time when Carla disclosed her cirrhosis diagnosis five months before her demise. Teri offered support for rehabilitation, but Carla continued to battle her addiction, exacerbated by personal challenges like a miscarriage, a difficult breakup, and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.
Noticing warning signs of Carla’s escalating alcohol consumption, Teri’s grandson alerted her, prompting her to intervene and encourage Carla to seek medical help. Despite Carla’s desire for a family and enduring past traumas, her addiction spiraled, evident in the accumulation of empty wine bottles at her home.
Tragically, in December 2023, while Teri was on holiday, Carla’s health deteriorated rapidly, leading to her hospitalization and subsequent passing. Teri’s grief is compounded by the regret of not preventing the alcohol deliveries that fueled Carla’s addiction, prompting her to launch a petition for stricter regulations on alcohol home deliveries to safeguard vulnerable adults.
Teri emphasized the need for accountability among supermarkets and delivery companies to prevent similar tragedies, highlighting the loopholes that currently exist in the system. She hopes that by raising awareness and advocating for change, other families can be spared the anguish she has endured.
