“Mother Advocates for Water Safety Minister Amid Rising Drowning Incidents”

A mother, Vanessa Abbess, who tragically lost her son Joe to a rip current in Bournemouth, is advocating for the appointment of a water safety minister in the UK to address the concerning rise in drowning incidents among children. Vanessa, approaching the third anniversary of Joe’s passing, expressed deep concern after learning about the recent spike in drownings, with 19 fatalities in just a week.

Despite Joe being a proficient swimmer and highly responsible, he fell victim to a rip current while enjoying a beach outing with friends during their holiday in May 2023. The incident, which also claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl, emphasized the sudden and unpredictable nature of rip currents that can swiftly pull individuals away from the shore.

Vanessa shared poignant memories of Joe, highlighting his caring nature and foresight in ensuring the safety of others. She recounted the last moments she spent with Joe before the tragic event unfolded, underscoring the profound impact of his untimely demise on their family.

In an effort to raise awareness about water safety and prevent future tragedies, Vanessa has been actively collaborating with various organizations since September 2023. She is urging the government to prioritize drowning prevention as a critical public health issue, stressing the importance of education and proactive measures to save lives.

Reflecting on the devastating loss and the enduring grief, Vanessa emphasized the need for decisive action to prevent further tragedies and honor Joe’s memory by advocating for improved water safety measures.
