Nigel Farage became agitated when questioned about receiving a £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire on a TV show. The leader of Reform UK declined to address inquiries on BBC Breakfast regarding the undisclosed amount gifted by Christopher Harborne in 2024, just before announcing his candidacy in the upcoming general election.
A parliamentary ethics committee has initiated an investigation into Farage’s failure to report the seven-figure donation from the tycoon based in Thailand. Regulations mandate that new Members of Parliament must declare any relevant gifts and contributions received within the past year.
In a recent interview, Farage suggested that the disclosure of the gift was due to his phone being hacked by Russian cybercriminals. However, he has not provided any evidence to support this assertion.
While maintaining a low profile in recent weeks, Farage emerged to grant interviews commemorating the Brexit vote anniversary. Despite this, he appeared flustered when pressed about the monetary gift.
When asked if the gift impacted his party’s performance in the Makerfield by-election, Farage dismissed the significance, stating that only the media cared about it. However, he acknowledged the investigation by the Parliamentary standards watchdog following a complaint lodged by the Conservative Party chairman.
Farage asserted his innocence, emphasizing his conscientious financial practices since becoming an MP and labeling the matter as entirely private, subject to the standards commissioner’s interpretation.
The purpose of the gift has been subject to varying explanations from Farage, initially citing it for security expenses and later describing it as a token of appreciation for his pro-Brexit campaigning efforts.
When questioned about his spending of the gift, Farage asserted it was a personal matter and compared it to the interviewer’s discretionary expenses. He maintained that he had no regrets about not disclosing the gift, believing that voters would not be concerned about his financial holdings.
In a separate interview, Farage characterized the gift as a tribute for sacrificing a significant portion of his life. Refuting claims of property acquisition post-gift, he dismissed such rumors as irrelevant, emphasizing that the transaction was completed and scrutinized beforehand.
