After being born 17 weeks premature, a pair of twins dubbed as “miracle” babies have spent a remarkable eight months in the hospital. Amy Sharkey, aged 32, gave birth to her daughter Orla at just 23 weeks and two days, weighing a mere 1lb 1oz, followed by her son Frankie four days later, weighing 1lb and 5oz. The parents, Amy and her partner Jack Ginn, were informed that the survival odds were typically less than 10 percent.
Frankie endured a 161-day hospital stay before being discharged in February 2026. Subsequently, Orla spent an additional 61 days fighting before the entire family was able to return home in April of the same year. Despite ongoing health challenges, the couple expressed that the twins are currently thriving.
Jack, a construction worker from Linlithgow in West Lothian, Scotland, described Orla’s early days, highlighting her tiny size comparable to a mango with miniature limbs. He emphasized how her hands were as small as his fingernail. In comparison, Frankie, though slightly larger, remained relatively small and required immediate medical attention.
Amy’s pregnancy progressed normally until her 20-week scan, showing no signs of concern. However, on August 19, 2025, she was already two centimeters dilated, four and a half months before her due date, necessitating immediate hospitalization and a cervical stitch procedure. This intervention proved critical in prolonging the pregnancy and ensuring the twins’ survival.
Following a series of medical complications and surgeries, including bowel infections and laparotomies, both twins displayed remarkable resilience. Despite ongoing health issues such as chronic lung disease and eye conditions, the twins continue to defy expectations and make progress in their recovery journey.
The family’s unwavering gratitude extends to the dedicated healthcare professionals at the Simpsons Special Care Babies Unit and the Ronald MacDonald charity, whom they credit for the twins’ survival. Jack and Amy emphasized the importance of this support during their challenging hospital stay, acknowledging the exceptional care and dedication provided.
As the twins continue their recovery journey, the couple remains hopeful for the future, acknowledging the miraculous journey that brought them to this point and expressing gratitude for the unwavering support that helped them navigate the challenges along the way.
