Despite her relatively short tenure as a senior working member of the Royal Family, Meghan Markle had the opportunity to experience the privileges that come with being part of the institution. This experience unfolded during her time in the Firm alongside Prince Harry.
After tying the knot with Prince Harry in 2018, the couple resided in two royal homes within a span of less than two years before their departure in 2020. Initially, Meghan and Harry lived in Nottingham Cottage on the Kensington Palace estate, where Harry had proposed to her before their grand wedding in Windsor.
Subsequently, they moved to Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate, a property gifted to them by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Although they developed a strong attachment to Frogmore Cottage over time, reports indicate that the couple had initially expressed interest in residing at Windsor Castle. However, their request was turned down by the Queen, who deemed it inappropriate as only the Queen and Prince Philip had private quarters within the castle at that time.
Royal expert Hugo Vickers mentioned that there were potential living spaces within the castle grounds that the Sussexes might have considered, but the decision was made to not pursue this option. Windsor held a special significance for Prince Harry and Meghan, being the location of their wedding and their son Archie’s christening.
In a book titled The New Royals, author Katie Nicholl shared insights into the Queen’s gesture of offering Frogmore Cottage to the couple. She quoted Lady Elizabeth Anson, who highlighted the significance of this gift from the Queen and the hope that Harry and Meghan would respect the privacy it afforded.
Reflecting on their time at Frogmore, Prince Harry expressed their deep contentment in his memoir Spare, emphasizing their love for the place and the connection they felt to it. The couple cherished their moments spent in the gardens and interactions with the staff, showing appreciation for the beauty and care they found at Frogmore.
