A family in County Durham had a startling wake-up call when a bus crashed into their front garden, leading the homeowners to rush to aid the driver. Claire Read, along with her husband, Peter, sprang into action upon hearing the commotion caused by the bus veering off course and plowing through their property.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning around 9.30am on Hilltop in Stanley. Claire, 41, initially mistook the loud noise for thunder as she had just gotten out of bed. To her shock, she discovered that a Go North East bus had careened into their garden, causing significant damage, including demolishing the area where their sons usually played football.
Witnessing the aftermath, Claire and Peter quickly responded to the situation as they heard cries for help. It became evident that the bus driver required immediate assistance. The bus, carrying approximately 10 passengers, had reportedly deviated off Chester Road East, crossed traffic lights, hit a traffic island, and crashed into the family’s property.
Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene, with firefighters aiding in extracting the driver from the wreckage. One individual was taken to University Hospital North Durham, although it remains unconfirmed if this person was the driver. Despite the extensive property damage, Claire emphasized that her primary concern was the well-being of those involved.
Expressing relief that no lives were lost, Claire acknowledged the irreplaceable value of human safety over material possessions. She reflected on the potential dangers the accident posed, especially considering that her children often played near the now-demolished football goal. Although shaken by the morning’s events, Claire maintained a composed outlook, recognizing the unpredictability of such incidents.
A spokesperson from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service disclosed details of the incident, confirming that the bus had left the road due to concerns about the driver experiencing a medical emergency. Fire crews from Consett and High Handenhold collaborated with ambulance and police personnel at the scene, providing necessary support and assessing the individuals involved before concluding their assistance by 11.15am.
