“Massive Wildfire Evacuates 1,000 in Spain”

A massive wildfire has ravaged approximately 30,000 acres of land in a popular tourist destination in Spain, leading to the evacuation of over 1,000 residents from their homes.

The fire erupted in a pine forest in Cerro de Cinco Villas, located near the residential areas of Los Robles and San Lorenzo in Zaragoza province. The incident triggered the mobilization of about 400 emergency personnel and 19 aircraft to combat the blaze.

Videos released by Spain’s Civil Guard depict the rapid spread of flames through the forest, creating thick orange smoke in the sky as emergency teams tirelessly work to extinguish the fire. Authorities have noted that the fire remains active and is yet to be fully contained as of Saturday afternoon.

Several towns including Orés, Asín, Luesia, Malpica de Arba, and Uncastillo have been issued evacuation orders while firefighters strive to safeguard the affected communities.

The Ministry of Defence in Spain reported that emergency teams are collaborating with local authorities in the Aragon region to manage the wildfire. By Saturday evening, the fire had encompassed an estimated perimeter of 15,800 hectares.

Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, the regional finance and interior minister of Aragon, expressed cautious optimism about the progress made in tackling the fire. He highlighted that while the fire has not expanded its perimeter and is no longer uncontrollable like in previous days, efforts must continue to stabilize the situation promptly.

Firefighters, helicopters, bulldozers, and specialized ground crews remain actively engaged in containment operations at the site of the wildfire.

Spain has been grappling with recurring heatwaves in recent times, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C during the summer season.

Earlier this week, a separate wildfire in Almería province claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, including seven British nationals. Among the victims were Pete and Fran Gillam, residents of Bédar village.
