Lottery Winner Volunteers at Food Bank, Inspires Community

A fortunate individual who won £6.1 million in the Lottery is now dedicating time to help at a local food bank. Kevin Jones, a bus driver, and his wife Michele matched the winning numbers in 2016, leading to an overnight transformation of their lives. Michele expressed that one of the most fulfilling aspects of their newfound financial freedom is the ability to assist those in need at their community food bank, The Pantry @ Sandbach Hub.

Michele enthusiastically joined the food bank team four years ago to provide support to individuals facing challenges with food affordability and living expenses. She mentioned, “I’ve always had the desire to help others, and now I have the opportunity. My husband noticed they were looking for volunteers, and I joined without hesitation.” The pantry not only offers low-cost food but also connects residents with organizations that provide guidance and practical aid.

Being part of The Pantry team has become a deeply fulfilling experience for Michele, who emphasized the remarkable work they do for people in need. She expressed gratitude for contributing to ensuring that nobody in the community goes hungry. In addition to volunteering at the food bank, the couple has actively participated in various community projects, including supporting an arts group in Manchester earlier this year through collaborations with the National Lottery.

Kevin recalled the moment he discovered his lottery win while working on his bus route between Crewe and Newcastle-under-Lyme. Despite the life-changing news, he completed his shift the following day, not wanting to disappoint passengers relying on his service. The couple relocated to Sandbach from Crewe to be closer to family and have since focused on securing their loved ones’ future.

Reflecting on their winnings, Kevin highlighted the joy of being able to provide financial stability to their family members and the newfound freedom from financial constraints. Their story coincides with significant changes in the Lotto game, as operator Allwyn plans to revamp the game to double the number of millionaires created annually, with each £2 Lotto line offering two chances to win, resulting in a projected increase in millionaires from 140 to about 345 per year. These alterations aim to generate more funds for charitable causes across the UK.
