London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is set to back a proposal to ban social media for individuals under 16, citing the necessity to address ongoing risks associated with online platforms. The pressure is increasing on the UK government to consider raising the minimum age for accessing platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram, following similar actions taken by Australia.
During a speech in London today, Sir Sadiq is expected to argue that social media companies should be required to demonstrate the safety of their platforms, similar to other industries. He believes that until these firms can ensure the safety of children, a ban is crucial to mitigate the existing harms.
However, he will emphasize that a ban alone is not a comprehensive solution and advocate for a reimagining of social media. Sir Sadiq will stress the importance of platforms prioritizing people over profit and fostering connections without negative consequences.
At the SXSW London event, Sir Sadiq will unveil a £1 million initiative to support boys and young men in London, highlighting the risks of online misogyny impacting the younger generation. He will call on tech companies to address the spread of misogyny on their platforms and make necessary adjustments to prevent it, warning of potential government intervention if action is not taken.
Sir Sadiq will criticize manosphere influencers for promoting harmful content that can have severe consequences for both young men and women. He will underscore the need to engage young men in discussions on toxic masculinity to prevent feelings of alienation and seeking validation in unhealthy outlets.
The proposed funding includes a new program for fathers and the placement of football mentors in communities across London. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has hinted at the government’s consideration of a social media ban for individuals under 16, following strong public support for such measures in response to an online safety consultation.
The consultation, which received over 100,000 responses, indicated overwhelming parental backing for a ban on social media for under 16s. Apart from a potential ban, the government is exploring other restrictive measures like app usage limits, restrictions on addictive features, and time curfews to address online safety concerns.
While some advocate for a ban, others caution against it, warning of potential unintended consequences such as driving young users towards unregulated online spaces. The focus remains on making social media platforms safer for all users, rather than solely relying on bans.
