The torch relay for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 will kick off in Atlanta, the host of the 1996 U.S. Summer Games, and traverse all 50 states, as announced by organizers on Tuesday. Originating from Olympia, Greece, where the Olympic Games originated, the Olympic flame will embark on its U.S. journey in the spring of 2028. The specific route for the torch relay will be disclosed in 2027.
LA28 officials have revealed that this relay will be among the largest in Olympic history, encompassing renowned landmarks, cultural and sporting events, and festive celebrations in various cities across the nation. Casey Wasserman, the chair and president of LA28, expressed pride in the shared privilege of carrying the flame to Los Angeles, involving Americans from every state in the journey towards the Opening Ceremony.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens conveyed the city’s excitement in welcoming back the Olympic flame after 32 years since hosting the centennial Summer Games. He highlighted Atlanta’s growth and readiness to embrace the spirit of the Games as the flame returns to the U.S., uniting the community in celebration and setting the stage for its onward passage to Los Angeles.
Following the conclusion of the Olympics in August 2028, the Paralympic torch relay will commence, starting from Stoke Mandeville, England, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement. The U.S. starting point for this relay will be announced later. Both torch relays will be supported by sponsors including Coca-Cola, JPMorganChase, Allstate, and Xfinity.
