The Toronto Maple Leafs have bolstered their offensive lineup with the addition of skilled forward Kirill Marchenko from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a major trade deal on the eve of the new NHL season. Marchenko has inked a lucrative six-year, $75-million contract with the Maple Leafs, as confirmed by his agent, Dan Milstein.
In exchange for Marchenko, the Maple Leafs have acquired goaltender Elvis Merzlikins and winger Miles Wood from Columbus. The trade also involves sending young power forward Matthew Knies, veteran center Steven Lorentz, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a second-round pick to the Blue Jackets. Columbus will retain 18 percent of Merzlikins’ salary, and the second-round pick involved was originally obtained by Toronto in a prior trade with Seattle.
Marchenko, who was the 49th overall pick in the 2018 draft, has demonstrated his scoring prowess with 102 goals and 208 points in 292 NHL regular-season games for Columbus. Last season, he led the Blue Jackets with 27 goals and 40 assists, totaling 67 points in 76 games.
On the other side of the trade, the Blue Jackets gain forward Matthew Knies, who despite battling injuries last season, managed to achieve a career-best 66 points with 23 goals and 43 assists in 79 games.
The move comes as the Maple Leafs regroup following a season where they missed the playoffs for the first time in ten years. The team, which boasts offensive talents like Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares, has been reshaping its roster. General manager John Chayka orchestrated a lineup overhaul, bringing in players like Sergei Bobrovsky, Darren Raddysh, Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons, Nick Paul, Brandon Duhaime, and Teddy Blueger.
Matthew Knies, a promising young winger selected 57th overall in 2021, has been a key part of Toronto’s future plans. Despite trade rumors circulating since the March deadline, Chayka reaffirmed Knies’ importance to the team, emphasizing his unique blend of physicality and scoring ability.
The Maple Leafs continue to make strategic moves to strengthen their roster, aiming to compete at a high level in the upcoming season.
