In the Rethymno area of southern Crete, wildfires are burning uncontrollably from all directions, hampered by strong winds that prevent the deployment of firefighting aircraft. Thousands of individuals, including tourists, have been evacuated from the area. Urgent evacuation orders have also been issued for portions of Paros and Andros.
Tragic incidents have occurred in Greece, with three firefighters losing their lives. Two firefighters were trapped in a vehicle while battling flames in Crete, while another firefighter in the southern Peloponnese port town of Gytheio was found unconscious and later pronounced dead. In Turkey, wildfires are ravaging parts of Antalya and Mugla province, popular tourist destinations. The spread of fires has been accelerated by strong winds, particularly in Mugla, where the coastal resort of Bodrum is located.
Meanwhile, in the UK, properties have been evacuated due to a large heathland blaze in Suffolk during the country’s fourth heatwave of the summer. Fire services are actively responding to the situation.
