A beloved homeware retailer is preparing to shut down one of its London stores as part of a closure plan that includes 23 locations across the UK. Topps Tiles is offering discounted prices at its Cheam store until its final day on August 7, aiming to achieve cost savings through a comprehensive closure initiative.
Local residents have noticed clearance signs appearing in the windows of the popular store, which was praised for its excellent service. This closure is part of a larger strategy that involves shutting down a total of 23 stores this year. In April, the company announced the closure of an additional 15 stores on top of the previously planned eight closures, accounting for 7% of its total stores.
Topps Tiles’ CEO, Alex Jensen, explained that the closures are intended to support ongoing growth and establish a stronger financial foundation for the future. The company is taking proactive measures to address subdued consumer sentiment, geopolitical uncertainties, and cost inflation, focusing on the second half of the year.
The specific locations slated for closure have not been disclosed by the retailer. Topps Tiles emphasized that these closures are part of significant cost-cutting measures designed to improve financial performance. Headquartered in Enderby, Leicestershire, the company reported a slight sales decline to £142.7 million in the first half of the year, attributing it to competitive challenges following the acquisition of CTD Tiles in 2024.
In recent years, many prominent retailers have downsized their presence on the high street, with companies like WHSmith shifting focus to airports and travel locations. Major banks such as Santander and Lloyds have also closed physical branches as customers increasingly turn to online banking.
