A Scottish teenage boy underwent advanced brain surgery after experiencing pins and needles in his leg, initially thought to be growing pains. Toby Peart, 13, from Strathpeffer, was among the first patients in Scotland to benefit from a new technology introduced in the region.
In April 2025, Toby started feeling pins and needles and pain in his left leg, which worsened over several months. An MRI scan at Raigmore Hospital revealed a brain tumor, leading to his referral to a Glasgow facility for specialized care. At the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Toby underwent a unique surgery using a robot-assisted camera known as a 3D exoscope, enhancing precision in complex brain procedures.
The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde installed the B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope, offering superior image quality, illumination, and depth perception. Toby’s surgery in November successfully addressed a non-cancerous 13–14mm brain tumor on the right side, utilizing the innovative 3D exoscope for improved accuracy.
Toby’s father, Marc, commended the medical team for their care during his son’s surgery. Marc described the challenging period as one of the toughest for their family, emphasizing Toby’s quiet nature and the sudden discovery of his condition.
Despite post-surgery risks such as sight or paralysis loss, Toby showed remarkable progress, initially experiencing weakness and later regaining movement. His improved strength allowed him to return home after a week and resume school in January, marking a significant milestone for the family.
The B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope technology at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has revolutionized brain surgery, enabling enhanced visualization and better surgical outcomes. Consultant neurosurgeon Roddy O’Kane highlighted the benefits of the technology for pediatric brain surgeries, emphasizing the improved visibility and efficiency it offers during procedures.
