England’s upcoming World Cup match has been rescheduled due to the prediction of thunderstorms in Mexico City. Originally set to commence at 1am UK time on Monday, the game will now begin at 7pm UK time on Sunday following FIFA’s decision to adjust the start time. Weather forecasts indicated severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall were expected to hit Mexico City at the initial kick-off time.
Projections showed nearly 5mm of rain anticipated at the Banorte Stadium, also known as the Azteca, with a significant band of stormy weather spanning the Mexican capital. According to safety regulations for the tournament, any lightning strike detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium triggers an automatic 30-minute play delay.
Similar weather-related disruptions occurred at other World Cup matches. France’s group-stage game against Iraq in Philadelphia was delayed for over two hours due to severe weather conditions.
FIFA’s World Cup rules grant organizers the authority to “cancel, reschedule, or relocate” matches at their discretion if safety concerns arise. England’s forward Marcus Rashford acknowledged the potential schedule change, emphasizing the team’s readiness and focus on the upcoming challenges.
Rashford stated, “Our preparation for the game remains the same – we must stay focused and be prepared for any situation. It is one of our strengths as a team to adapt and face challenges.” The last-minute alteration was announced shortly after Keir Starmer confirmed that pubs in England and Wales could stay open until 5am to accommodate fans watching England’s late-night World Cup fixtures.
The Prime Minister’s relaxation of alcohol licensing laws meant that pubs and bars no longer needed special late licenses. The match in Mexico City was initially expected to conclude after 3am UK time, with the potential for further delays if the game extended to penalties.
