A spokesperson for the Labour Party confirmed that Abbott, the longest-serving MP in the Commons, was readmitted on Tuesday evening, along with another suspended MP, Joani Reid. Both MPs have had the Labour whip restored, allowing them to resume their roles as Labour representatives in the House of Commons.
Abbott, the first black woman to hold a seat in the chamber, faced suspension due to her reiterated comments on racism, despite issuing previous apologies for the same remarks. A statement released by the party emphasized the expectation of the highest standards from elected representatives and members and clarified that the assessment of any breaches is conducted independently.
Following a process in line with Labour Party regulations and overseen by an independent review board, Diane Abbott and Joani Reid have been formally readmitted to the Labour Party, with the Labour whip reinstated in the House of Commons. In response to the reinstatement, Abbott expressed her commitment to anti-racism and acknowledged her previous tweet that led to a formal warning.
Joani Reid voluntarily suspended herself from the Labour whip after her husband was arrested on suspicion of espionage for China. Despite not being personally implicated in any wrongdoing, Reid chose to abstain from her duties as a Labour MP until the investigation into her husband’s case concludes. She expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging time and affirmed her dedication to contributing to Scottish Labour’s renewal under new Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
