The post accompanying the video stated that individuals with terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) are in the U.S. unlawfully and must either depart immediately or face deportation. TPS is a U.S. designation that shields foreign nationals from deportation when conditions in their home countries are deemed hazardous.
In a controversial move, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to proceed with terminating TPS for Haitians, affecting over 300,000 individuals in the U.S. The termination took effect in late July amid concerns from advocates about escalating gang violence and instability in Haiti.
Critics, including the Florida Democratic Party and Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari, condemned the DHS video, denouncing the administration’s actions as inhumane. The White House defended the deportations, stating that federal courts have mandated the removal of Haitian individuals and free flights have been provided for their return.
Haiti continues to grapple with high levels of violence and insecurity, exacerbated by the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Gang-related violence has led to significant internal displacement, with reports of numerous fatalities and injuries in recent months.
