A dedicated tennis enthusiast who has been a long-time attendee at Wimbledon has garnered the reputation of being the tournament’s most devoted fan by queuing for tickets for 34 consecutive years.
Harry Taylor, aged 52, has established his annual tradition of setting up camp outside the prestigious tennis event since 1992, forming lasting friendships along the way. The Red Lion Inn owner from Bridge, Kent, remains unwavering in his commitment to attending Wimbledon and has now equipped himself more than ever before.
With a cutting-edge £300 heat-reflective tent, a 100-watt solar panel for charging electronics, and specialized video glasses for entertainment, Harry is fully prepared to endure any wait time. Despite the scorching heatwave this year, Harry eagerly joined the queue on Saturday morning, 48 hours ahead of Wimbledon Day One, securing the 28th spot.
Harry commented, “There are currently around 1,500 people in the queue. I started as number 28, but the line filled up rapidly between yesterday and today. It’s getting increasingly crowded, with 200 people joining every hour. The organization by the All England Club is exceptional, and each year, the queue experience improves significantly.”
The tournament organizers have become accustomed to the influx of campers annually and have implemented measures such as upgraded restroom facilities, numbered queue cards to prevent line-jumping, and stewards conducting checks on tents, phone chargers, and food vendors to serve the waiting fans.
To enhance his waiting experience, Harry has invested in advanced technology including a larger 100-watt solar panel for extended device charging during his 12 to 13-day stay. Additionally, he has incorporated a projector screen integrated into his sunglasses for World Cup viewing and a new heat-reflective tent for added comfort.
The camaraderie among the queuing fans has blossomed into a close-knit community, with Harry highlighting the friendships formed and the group chat discussions about the matches. Expressing his deep appreciation for Wimbledon, Harry emphasized, “Wimbledon stands out as the premier tennis tournament globally. It’s a must-visit event where excitement permeates the players, us in the queue, and everyone involved.”
Regarding his pick for this year’s champion, Harry is rooting for Jannik Sinner, especially with his favorite player Carlos Alcaraz sidelined due to injury. He explained, “The contenders are down to Sinner and Djokovic, but I’ll place my bet on Sinner since they are on the same side of the draw.”
