A devastating fire at a bar in Bangkok has led to a tragic death toll of 30 individuals. The fire broke out at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar in northern Bangkok on Sunday night, leaving over 70 people injured, with 24 in critical condition as reported by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
This incident marks the deadliest fire in Bangkok in the last 17 years. The bar, known as a brewery or beer hall in Thai, had a capacity for up to 600 patrons, though the exact number present during the fire is unknown.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and whether the bar was compliant with safety regulations. Many of the deceased were discovered trapped in windowless restrooms, indicating they may have sought refuge from the flames in vain.
In response to the tragedy, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt has mandated a comprehensive evaluation of similar establishments to evaluate safety risks. The enforcement of existing laws will be intensified to enhance safety standards across the city.
Mourners have left floral tributes at the site of the fire, with heartfelt messages in various languages expressing condolences to the victims. The president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association highlighted potential fire hazards at the bar due to factors like enclosed spaces and inadequate ventilation, which could have contributed to the rapid spread of toxic smoke.
It was revealed that the bar was licensed as a restaurant with live music, rather than an entertainment venue, which led to less stringent fire safety requirements. Calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety procedures and laws have been made to prevent future tragedies.
