Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani of Brazil progressed to the quarterfinals in the women’s doubles event at the U.S. Open on Monday. The duo defeated Eri Hozumi from Japan and Andreja Klepac from Slovenia with a commanding score of 6-0, 6-3. Their strong performance included three aces and successfully converting four out of eight break-point opportunities, securing victory in just 55 minutes.
Next, Dabrowski and Stefani are set to face the winners between Jiang Xinyu and Zhang Shuai of China and Miyu Kato from Japan along with Wu Fang-Hsien from Taiwan. Dabrowski, aged 24, a two-time U.S. Open doubles champion, previously clinched the women’s title partnering with Erin Routliffe from New Zealand in 2023 and 2025. Unfortunately, no Canadian players remain in the singles draws of the U.S. Open.
In another match, Zheng Qinwen staged a remarkable comeback from a 5-0 deficit for the second consecutive game, securing a spot in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. The Chinese athlete, who won the 2024 Olympic gold, defeated the 8th seed Iga Swiatek with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Zheng’s impressive performance makes her the first qualifier to reach the final eight in Flushing Meadows since Emma Raducanu’s victory in 2021.
Despite trailing 5-0 early in the match against Swiatek, Zheng displayed resilience and determination, eventually turning the tide in her favor. She will now face either Naomi Osaka or Elena Rybakina in the upcoming quarterfinals. Zheng’s previous U.S. Open success includes being a quarterfinalist in 2023 and 2024, and after overcoming an elbow surgery, she had to go through the qualifying rounds this year to secure a spot in the main draw.
Swiatek, the 2022 U.S. Open champion, struggled to maintain her lead against Zheng, failing to convert crucial set points. Zheng’s focused gameplay and strategic approach led to her victory, overcoming her opponent’s strong track record against her.
