Chaos erupted in Mexico City during the opening match of the World Cup between Mexico and South Africa. Videos circulating on social media depicted disturbances outside Gate 8 of Estadio Azteca, where protestors were seen throwing Molotov cocktails. Residents voiced concerns that authorities were prioritizing the event over pressing social issues affecting the nation.
Yesterday, over 1,000 relatives of missing individuals in Mexico marched towards the stadium, holding candles and photos of their loved ones. Despite the violence outside, the match continued, raising worries about the safety of the spectators. Additionally, an emergency unfolded at Gate 1 before the game, where an elderly man passed away due to a suspected heart attack.
The 80-year-old man received immediate medical attention from the World Cup security medical team, who performed CPR and stabilized him before transporting him to the hospital. Although initially in a stable condition, the man later succumbed to his condition, according to local authorities.
