A mother was viciously assaulted in her own home by her daughter and son-in-law, who forcibly entered her flat. The 56-year-old woman suffered severe injuries, including a brain bleed, after being kicked and dragged by her hair during the attack. Paula and Malcolm McGill were sentenced to four and a half years in jail for the assault that took place in Clydebank on May 6, 2024.
The High Court in Glasgow heard that the mother and her 41-year-old daughter had been estranged for around seven years, despite living nearby. The incident occurred after police responded to a noise complaint at a neighboring flat where the McGills resided. Paula McGill initially denied hearing anything when questioned by officers, but later, they forced their way into the victim’s flat.
The assault lasted only about 30 seconds, during which Paula McGill kicked and dragged her mother to the ground, while Malcolm McGill stomped on her ribs. The injured victim managed to crawl to her bedroom for help, where a neighbor found her and alerted the authorities. She suffered serious injuries, including fractures, a collapsed lung, and a brain bleed, requiring ongoing medical treatment.
Both assailants were arrested on the same day the victim was discharged from the hospital. Forensic evidence, such as blood marks on Malcolm McGill’s shoes, linked them to the attack. They pleaded guilty to assaulting the victim, leading to severe injury and endangering her life. Sentenced to four and a half years in prison, the McGills also received a lifelong non-harassment order from Lord Mulholland. Any violation of the order could result in imprisonment, as stated by the judge.
