“Queen Camilla’s Book Donation Transforms Lives”

Queen Camilla received positive feedback about the significant impact of a generous book donation from her reading charity to a homelessness organization. Accompanied by broadcaster Lorraine Kelly and author Elif Shafak, Camilla visited a St Mungo’s facility in South East London to witness firsthand how a reading initiative is positively influencing individuals recovering from homelessness.

The Queen’s Reading Room collaborated with St Mungo’s in 2024, following the inception of a book group by a colleague for individuals supported by the charity. This partnership has flourished, with The Queen’s Reading Room contributing numerous books, bookshelves, and specialized training resources to facilitate book clubs for homeless individuals.

Through this collaboration, St Mungo’s has observed enhanced confidence, improved well-being, and increased engagement with support services among its beneficiaries, ultimately aiding in their journey out of homelessness.

During her visit, Camilla interacted with various staff and volunteers at the center, including service managers and volunteers dedicated to ensuring the safety of the residents. She also engaged with individuals supported by the charity who shared how the reading scheme has positively influenced their recovery.

In the ‘Activities Room’ of the center, Camilla met participants of St Mungo’s shared reading program, appreciating the diverse selection of books available. Former client Lee expressed his emotional gratitude for the solace he found in reading during his time on the streets, highlighting the transformative power of stories in his life.

To mark the occasion, Camilla donated 20 books selected based on residents’ interests, including titles like Wuthering Heights and War Horse. She emphasized the importance of reading as a form of escapism and thanked St Mungo’s for the collaboration in promoting literacy among those they support.

St. Mungo’s, a prominent homelessness charity in England, has been instrumental in assisting over 28,000 individuals across various services. The reading scheme, operational in nine of the charity’s centers, has garnered praise from beneficiaries like Milena, who described how reading has reignited her passion and boosted her confidence.

Lorraine commended the Queen for her dedication to the cause, noting the positive impact of combining efforts to support the homeless with encouraging reading habits. The royal visit not only inspired enthusiasm but also highlighted the importance of such initiatives in empowering individuals to rebuild their lives.

Camilla expressed her pleasure in witnessing the positive outcomes of the reading program, emphasizing the role of books in offering solace and a gateway to different worlds. Her engagement with St Mungo’s reflects a shared commitment to fostering literacy and well-being among vulnerable populations.
