A 25-year-old man tragically took his own life in the presence of his father after facing challenges in securing his first professional job. James Keeping had been grappling with worsening mental health issues in the period leading up to his passing, seeking medical help and disclosing suicidal thoughts. Despite this, he passed away at the family farm in Duns Tew, near Bicester, on February 15.
During an inquest at Oxford Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that James had encountered difficulties in finding meaningful employment following his graduation from university in 2024. In a LinkedIn post, he reached out for assistance in job hunting, expressing his eagerness and adaptability. He highlighted his previous experiences in humanitarian work and conservation projects, emphasizing his desire to learn, contribute, and grow in a professional role.
Prior to the tragic event, James’ father, Simon, who had previously managed a jet wash firm for two decades, made an appeal on LinkedIn for assistance in aiding his son in securing a job. Simon acknowledged the challenges young people face in obtaining their first significant employment opportunity and expressed a desire to support James in his career aspirations.
The inquest disclosed that James, originally from Austin, Texas, was adopted by Mr. Keeping and his wife at a young age. He excelled in his academic pursuits, achieving A-levels in various subjects before completing a degree in marketing and management at Newcastle University in 2024.
Describing James’ interests, his father mentioned his son’s fixation on air pistols and modifications, possibly involving the weapon used in the tragic incident. James had been a member of a shooting club and held a shotgun license, but relinquished it after being diagnosed with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and experiencing anxiety.
On the day before his death, James spent time with his girlfriend, Lesha Jennings, reflecting on his emotions into the early hours of the morning. The following day, after accompanying Lesha home with his father, James became distraught and argumentative, expressing frustration over his unemployment.
Lesha, in her statement during the inquest, noted the decline in James’ mental well-being, with him expressing disillusionment and difficulty with life. Toxicology reports revealed a high level of alcohol in James’ system at the time of his death, leading the coroner to deliver a narrative verdict due to insufficient evidence to determine intent.
